Social Networking

I’ve used plenty of social networking sites like Digg, MySpace, Facebook for years, before most people knew they existed, but oneĀ  site that I didn’t jump on straight away, was Twitter.

The idea of the site never really appealed to me, and I never really gave it much thought.

At Web Directions this year in Sydney, I was surprised with the amount of people on Twitter and some of the things twitter did, so like a sheep, I signed up for an account.

The idea itself seems pretty stupid, posting what you’re doing online all the time – some ways, it is, but when you have an extended online community, it allows your friends/family or “followers” to keep up with what you’re doing, and it gives you a better sense of knowing each other. If you want to watch a pretty interesting video that explains Twitter – go here and click on the red box.

Off on a tangent for a sec, I alway find it incredible when I meet somebody who says “Oh I read your website about X” – I really don’t expect real people to read my site. Nor do I expect to people from organisations or companies I write about contact me about said article.

You’d imagine my surprise when I posted a “tweet” (Post of Twitter) saying I was looking for a 3G card for when I travel to New Zealand in December, and had an email from the NZ Vodafone External Communications Manager, who sent me links and help on how to get what I was after! Yes Paul, I agree Social Media does rule :)
