Australian iPhone on the way……………. So What!
For those who follow the technology and those who don’t, you’ll probably know that Apple, the maker of the iPod, are releasing the iPhone in Australia July 11th, in true Apple style, the new iPhone has a tonne of new features, can do twice as much, much thinner than its predecessor, and even costs less than half!
Apple originally launched the iPhone about a year back, for a hefty $850 USD. However, if you’re a true mac fan, like yours truly, then you’d cough up the insane amount of money and buy one. Apart from the awesomeness of the phone, you’d also have the cool factor that not many would have.
In December 2007 I was in Hawaii, and went to the Apple store at the Ala Moana Shopping Centre, and oh man, was it a pleasant experience. Apart from being able to play with all the other cutting edge Mac gear, the iPhone just blew my mind. However, I was a little reluctant to go spend about $700, as the AU-US dollar was really good (in my favour) even though it was a good deal, I just chickened out.
So about 6 months ago, I had some spare money sitting around, and decided to be one of the first to buy a “modified” iPhone that was designed for the USA, but would work in Australia. Wow, it arrived. What a beautiful phone. Just as I remember it in Hawaii. Amazing!
So now, I have a Gen 1 iPhone, and Gen 2 is coming out for about $250 (Reported) but for that price, everyone is going to have one. So, effectively, the coolness factor of the iPhone drops considerably. Just think about it, half the fun of having a BMW is that really nobody else has on, and when you see every man and his dog driving one, it makes you want one so much less.
Thanks Apple, add my Generation 1 Macbook, My Generation 1 Video iPod, and a Generation 1 iPhone. All three cost me more, and are worth absolutely nothing now. I guess that’s the price for having all the cool toys soon as they are released.
Or serves you well for trying to be cool
Yet you always fail… always.
Ben,
Do you never learn? Never buy the first of anything, always let some other mug sort the bugs out.
Oh but it’s no fun to say you bought a second generation iPhone. I was probably the only person in town, and probably one of the handful in Queensland who had one
So you just want to show off? What a pathetic person you are.
Mr McDonald, not really show off. It’s a good feeling to have something cool that nobody else really has.
“Mr McDonald, not really show off. It’s a good feeling to have something cool that nobody else really has.”
I believe that’s what showing off is my kind sir.
Showing off, in my opinion would be going around saying to people “Hey! Look at me, I have an iPhone, do you??? NO! ha ha!”
There is nothing wrong with enjoying what you have.
Just because someone buys a flash car doesn’t mean that was the reason for purchasing the car, they may just enjoy that car.
You’re the one blogging about it, so there is some sense in you showing off about it.
In some senses I may be showing off, but the nature of this post was not to brag about me owning one, it was to show you that everyone is going to have one, and the value of them has dropped considerably
Ben,
Change of topic. Has the Fraser Coast Forum been closed down?
No… I did have to update DNS servers, which may have caused it to go down momentarily. It should be back OK now..

I will be in the market for one at some point but not quite yet.
Hey Steven,
Dunno, I don’t think I’d get a fraction of what I paid for it ($800)…….
