Yagubi, what? When? Yagubi?

I recently went to the Yagubi Music Festival that is held in Hervey Bay annually. It has been established for many years, however, what’s happened over those years is that it’s reputation of being a good time out, has diminished. There are a number of things that have caused the festival to loose it’s reputation, primarily, it’s the ticket price.

For an adult to get in, you’re looking at a minimum of $11 to $58. $11 for a half day ticket, $33 for a fully day / night or $58 for a weekend ticket. For a weekend ticket for a family, you’re looking at about $110. Speaking to a local mother who wasn’t going, she said; “I’d rather take the kids to Dreamworld for that money, and we’d have a really good weekend away.”
Now these thoughts are my own, and not of any organisation I may be affiliated with, but the event is just crap. I haven’t gone to it in years, because a) It doesn’t interest me, and I guess it’s never been marketed in a way I like, or, the marketing of the event has never grabbed me. b) is the cost. For even $30 I could have a good time out at the pub, video & pizza store, movies, anywhere-!! Also it’s location- the festival is held in the towns oval. My thoughts are that this is a terrible venue for any festival it has no atmosphere. Being on a hot field walking under tents does not appeal to me in any way.
Just recently was the Fraser Coast Cultural Festival. It was a huge success, perhaps because for every one of those points mentioned before, it was improved upon.
I don’t think that Yagubi is going to continue to improve, but collapse to a smaller event. Perhaps a one day event, that is much cheaper than present.

yagubi
Don’t be fooled, this is at “peak” time, on the sunday.. looks like a ghost town to me.

  1. I think what you have said about Yagubi is crap. Ive been going to Yagubi since I moved to Queensland and it is a fantastic festival. Why shoot it down when there are many people who work had to keep it going. And you so called Sunday peak time photo is garbage. They get thousands of people there and fantastic food and music. Do you want me to supply pictures of the crowd for you.

  2. Hi Shayne - Thanks for your feedback.

I was just expressing my feedback about the event - I know there was a lot more activity and more people at different times of the day. However those photos were of lunch time (my lunch break) on the Sunday.

I’m not trying to Bash the festival in no means, however I still stick by my opinion that the festival is not all it could be. Perhaps it’s just me? But the money that is charged in MY opinion is too much.

Working in event management in the past, I know how hard people work to get these things going.

It’ll be interesting next year to see what changes. Yagubi was different this year, in that the Fraser Coast Cultural Festival also started, and also was quite close from a date perspective.

  3. Ben, for someone who isn’t “trying to Bash the festival in no means” there are some pretty harsh “bashing-like” words coming from you about how u feel the festival is going. I agree with Shayne as someone who has also been going for years and also enjoys it every year. I too have many photos of the packed out crowds that i could show you. And by the way Sunday is the slowest day of the three day event, wouldn’t exactly call it peak hour there. If the event doesn’t interest you why did u go and then go to the bother of writing this little speal of yours? Oh and PS, the sea front oval is the only place big enough in Hervey bay to hold such an event and many are held there every year, so sorry that we are still a small, sleepy, seaside town. Next year try the Ecca, perhaps that will “appeal” to you more.

  4. Chirssy, I’m sorry you feel that way. I went to Yagubi because I’m a local, and I hadn’t been in many years.

The price was not right, and I took pictures of what I saw. I didn’t fake it!

BTW: This year Yagubi isn’t even on. Take a look at http://frasercoastfreeclarion.blogspot.com/2008/04/yagubi-postponed.html

  5. You say “$30 I could have a good time out at the pub, video & pizza store, movies, anywhere-!!”
how can you compare music blaring from a little speaker to live music and entertainment? would you rather sit your fat ass on a couch watching movies and eating pizza, rather then going out to watch street performers and having a meal with friends? sure the price has increased, but i am sure that was due to lack of support and sponser? right?

Not happy with the venue? outside, nice weather, right next to a beach….its the company you keep with you that makes the place.

“I’d rather take the kids to Dreamworld for that money, and we’d have a really good weekend away.”
its that attitude that is killing a great thing…

Lets keep on supporting this event, it will be sad to miss it for a second year.

Maybe this festival is just not for you… enjoy your pizza and dvd’s, i know what i’d rather..

p.s $30 for a good night at the pub BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Price check?

  6. Well the event hasn’t run from the last year, so that alone speaks for itself.

I’m not having a go about Hervey Bay venues, anywhere you go, the company you take can make or break it.

RE the Dreamworld mention, that was nothing to do with me, that was someone else’s call, not mine.

  7. If “It doesn’t interest me” is your first reason for not going, then why go and then bag it?

There are very few events that interst a majority of people - that’s what diversity is about - but it does not help the local comunity if locals bag a community event that doesn’t interest them because their interests are in something different, like videos and pizzas.

Small wonder the event had critial problems this year with locals making comments like this!

  8. I never did interest me, but as it is a LOCAL event and it had been a while since I’d last went, I thought I’d SUPPORT a LOCAL event.. After I’d paid my money and walked around I wrote this post - my recap on the event.

Some people would love this, no doubt.
